If
you are a proprietorship, you are ineligible for coverage under
workers' compensation. If you are injured in any type of work-related
incident, chances are fairly good that your own medical and/or disability
insurance policy will also deny you benefits outright, as many are
subject to an exclusion for such claims. The same would also
apply to those principals of partnerships or corporations who have
elected to exclude themselves from coverage under the comp policy
for the business.
This
argues for very careful scrutiny of your medical and disability
policies for the exclusions. Some may allow you to buy back the
exclusion for a fairly nominal additional premium. In cases
where workers' comp coverage is available to partners or corporate
officers, clearly that should be considered.
